Forensics and I

Hello ! Renxkyoko Iglesias here.

So I mentioned  something about a potential life- changing career move on my previous post. ( or is it potentially ? ) To be honest, I don’t really like to talk about it because , jinx. It’s like counting the chicken before they hatch, and I’d get disappointed again.

Here’s the backround story……. Most of my old readers know I graduated with 2 college degrees, Cellular and Molecular Biology , Minor in Chemistry, and Forensics Biology. I applied  at a dairy company as a microbiologist , landed the job , and this is where I am currently working. At the same time, I also applied at  our city law enforcement’s forensics department as  Criminalist 1 (  California’s term for Forensics scientist ). Unfortunately, I got a Rank 4 . Only Ranks 1,2 & 3 are considered for the job . Although I was an A+ student, passed the test with a grade of 90, I lost to experience. It frustrated me to no end because, which comes first, the chicken or the egg. How will any newbie , like moi, ever get experience if  you don’t give me the job, please tell me.  I understand they want expertise and vast knowledge, but I applied as Criminalist 1, not Criminalist 5 . My friend who’s a law officer said Rank 4 was good enough, and I was told my application would be in their data base for 3 years. She tells me to be patient , and wait for a criminalist to retire. What ! !

Two weeks ago, I was notified there was  another job opening … an assistant aka lab tech ( not  scientist ) in Forensics Dep’t. Although the job is waaaaaay  below my level of  education,  I applied  again, submitted my  new resume ( now with one year of laboratory experience ) , took the test, got 95 %, and Rank 2.  The next step is an interview  , hopefully , soon.  I read the description of the job…. it’s  similar to a Criminalist’s job. In fact, a Forensics lab tech may also be called to appear in court .  Maybe I’ll be like that rookie criminalist  who will do the dirty job.? In school, we were shown a video of a woman jumping into the dumpster and rummaging through a mountain of trash to look for  crime evidence…. and our professor said ” Class,  she’s a rookie criminalist “.  Oh, so, that’s what rookies do. I’m totally okay with that. I’ll wash test tube  and beakers, throw away the biohazard garbage, mop the floor ( janitorial services, who cares ), buy coffee,  as long as I can set foot in a Forensics lab. Funny thing is, a Forensics lab tech pay is $ 2 more per hour than my current pay .

Don’t get me wrong. I love my current job, and it’s just 12 to 15 minutes from my house.  I keep the food safe for you, guys, so it’s all good.

Peering through a microscope in a laboratory is going to be my life, now and forever. * I just realized it…. there’s nowhere to run from that life. *

This is me, now and forever.

To be honest, my current job is a microbiologist’s work, which is not what I studied for.   A Cellular and Molecular Biologist’s job is basically  in RESEARCH, mostly in drug companies ( or like in Cancer Research  Center ) where we research on stuff that affect organisms in cellular and molecular level. It’s hardcore, guys. I did apply at Genentech and Monsanto, but there were no openings as of yet. No major drug companies here in my beautiful city, unfortunately.  Besides, I’m not ready to relocate yet.

Researching and discovering a cure for cancer and other diseases is a very noble job,  but , at the moment, my heart’s in discovering whodunit.

This is all for now. Thanks for reading my thoughts….

Check out my manga/anime/video games blogsite @ http://2megaworthitwordpresscomblog.wordpress.com/

And yes, I still watch  anime ( though not so much these days ), read manga (  there are good on- going stories out there I’ve been following for ages and I want to know what happens ) and play video games ( I;m currently playing  Lara Craft , Rise of the Tomb Raider that I just bought last week , on sale on Play Station store for $ 7.99……. 2 months ago, it was $ 49.99 )

Move Over Boys, the Girls Want Your Video Games

( The pic above isn’t mine, but I do look like that the second I start playing …… Lara Craft, let’s do this.)

Folks,  It’s perfectly okay if I don’t get that job.

Also, if I do get the job, I will have to delete all my social media accounts.  I’ve been told I ‘d have to do that.

Bye ! ! ! * waves *

  2. Congratulations. I don’t understand a lot of what you do, but you must be one smart person. The sciences weren’t my best classes in college. I look forward to hearing about your new and exciting career in the future.

    • Even in my current job, I’m not supposed to talk about what I do in the laboratory.

I heard in Forensics, our lips should be tightly zipped, as well. I guess it comes with the territory.

  4. Interesting career you would have, not that you don’t have one already (as you’ve said) 🙂
I just know one should do what they love!

    • I love both careers, microbiology and forensics… but I have to admit Forensics is very , very interesting. We never know what we’ll get or discover in that box of evidence.

  5. Tell me about the experience thing! Every single time I see a job listing, they demand experience of a billion years… Seriously why doesn’t anyone realise that we won’t get any experience if no one hires us. So frustrated with it. 😤 I have done my masters in biotechnology.. there are no jobs for me in this country.. if my present plan doesn’t work out I’ll have to unwillingly work hard to pursue PhD. 😢

    • This is most frustrating for newbies like us, especially in companies that don’t want to train newcomers. India is becoming another powerhouse , so I’m surprised you can’t find work in biotechnology. It’s a big country, though, so maybe biotechnology companies are located somewhere? There aren’t major pharmaceutical companies in my area, either. They are located in the Bay Area ( San Francisco, etc ) and Southern California ( LA ).

  7. Well, I have mixed feelings. I want you to get a dream job, but I don’t want to go without this blog. Notice how I brought it back to me rather than you? I’m despicable.

    • My friend who’s a police officer is back on Instagram…. I don’t have Instagram, it isn’t my cup of tea. I don’t know what goes on there and why my friend thinks it’s alright to be on Instagram. WordPress is a blogging site so it’s a no-no.

  8. Yeah, most big Pharma are in the northeast… so relocating to a cold, damp place would not be a first choice we guess. How long before you can re-apply for Crim1?

    • Or in the Bay Area and Southern California.

I get notified if there’s an opening….. at the moment , nada. I hope I get this lab tech job even if I feel I’m overqualified. But I have to start somewhere, right, even if it means washing test tubes and beakers, and jumping into dumpsters, lol.

  9. Keep trying for one more step or to be rank number one to reach your dream job . Wish you the best .

    • I’m wary about Rank # 1. lol Ranking includes ” experience”. Oh, well. Good thing I have a job that I love, as well, though to be in Forensics is indeed my dream job.

  11. I just don’t know how to feel about this. I want you to do the work you’re interested in but will be sad to see you go from the internet. If it’s deleted how will we ever find you again, say after you retire and can start back up again? Your gravatar image still says that you’re a student. I think that every time I see you there in the corner, hey you’re not a student anymore. Congratulations on being an A+ student, by the way. I was on the other end of the spectrum. Not really even sure how I managed to finally get my degree.

    • I am not sure if they will tell me to get out of social media. I can understand why they’d want employees not be in them….. people do tend to blabber, and maybe talk about sensitive and delicate issues.

  12. Well….that was a real spanner you just threw in there! OMG! Well of course, you’ve got to go for it. I remember following you through all that stuff and your disappointment and I’m really excited that the career is potentially back on track! Wonderful news and I hope you get the job.

But as for deleting all your social media…oh my! You’ve been around so long in my blogging life I don’t know what I’ll do without you. I will certainly miss you but I’ll still be very excited for you – just disappointed that I can’t see how life pans out for you from now on. Will do you a final farewell post if you get the job? Do make sure you say goodbye 😦 😦 😦

    • We’ll see what happens. I have lowered my expectations…….the thing is, a friend told me that in Forensics, it’s ” whom you know “.

      • That’s like with all professions I’m afraid – even freelance writing…lol
Anyway if you do go offline, send me an email – I’d love to keep in touch 🙂

  15. Wow…..deleting all social media accounts. I can see why. I don’t want you gone in the blogosphere but I’ll pray for the best whichever it is. (getting the job or not)…God bless!

    Reply

    • Yeah, I can see why, also. That’s to prevent anyone from blabbering on sensitive issues on blogosphere. I’d be very disappointed if I didn’t get the job.

  16. You have such an impressive educational background! I’m sure it is tough to land the job you want when you are just starting out, but I’m sure after awhile you will get there. Interesting that you have to delete your accounts, I mean, after all, people who tell things are still loose out in the world as conversationalists. I hope everything turns out as you wish 😀

  18. Why you have to delete all your SM accounts?

    Reply

    • Its the same idea as a group of people , the jury, who are not allowed to talk about a court trial they are in….. anyone involved in sensitive crime investigations maybe tempted to blabber about what she/he is doing on social media.

Being on social media is not illegal, I guess. It’s merely an office policy. My friend who is in the force had to take out her social media accougts, but she’s back on Instagram.

  19. Well, good luck in following your career interest. And if the cost is social media, really, it’s a small price to pay.

  20. expirience and degree. it always baffles me. now a days to get a decent enough job, you need a college degree – alright, to college everyone goes. then when you apply, they want a 2 – 4 year expirience . ha! how can one have expirience when everyone won’t hire you without?

    Reply

  21. OK, you’re my hero. I’ve always wanted to go into Forensics but only because TV makes that job look awesome. I don’t have the patience or interest to go back to school so I think I just want to be an actress who plays a Forensic Scientist on TV.

  22. Best of luck with the interview. Wow, you picked up Rise of the Tomb Raider at a bargain price. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed the 2013 TR reboot.

  24. “How will any newbie , like moi, ever get experience if you don’t give me the job, please tell me. ” – that’s the point, the eternal problem…
