Obssesed much ? Not really, just shamelessly plugging and totally hyped up, because , finally, we see an animated Filipino female hero that is shown on a hugely popular platform that is Netflix.

Jay Oliva is the executive director of TRESE, also a Filipino-American, who is a storyboard artist, and film director of numerous Marvel and DC animated comics, such as The Dark Knight Returns, Parts 1 & 2, Flashpoint Paradox, Deadpool, Thor 3 , Justice League, Green Lantern, Legend of Korra, The Titans, and will be directing the animated version of Army of the Dead.

Maybe he is the reason why TRESE gives me that DC/Marvel vibes, rather than a typical Japanese anime. He says he’s enthusiastic to do this because it is part of his Filipino heritage.

Sorry that I’m shamelessly plugging the anime that depicts Filipino folklore ,mythology and urban legends. I’ve had enough of mecha robots , Zues, Dracula and Thor.

Problem is, Netflix does abandon even their own project if it doesn’t get enough audience. I want a Season 2. Philippine mythology offers so much more than are shown in this anime .

So, please watch on Netflix.

Next, I’m going to post an honest review and a few explanations. Six episodes are not enough to flush out the characters of Trese, both humans and supernaturals .

  1. So is this anime worth watching??? Did you liked this anime??

    • Yes, it is ! I liked the anime. But I’m biased, of course. I watched it in English and Japanese. I liked it slightly better in Japanese, but , I think my brain is just wired to hear Japanese when watching animes. LOL I rewatched it in English , and I felt slightly better listening to it in English.

        • I know , right ? I’ve been watching animes and animated cartoons about Dracula, and Norse Mythology , Greek, Roman, blah, blah. Now, other people will get to see about tiyanaks and tikbalangs that do car racing. How cool is that ?

          • Agreed. There is a channel on YouTube called Storied and they did a piece on Monstrum about the Manananggal. I thought it was well done. You could check it out if you are interested.

            • I’ll check that out. Oh, also, I watched this British crime series, and I think they investigate other-worldly crimes too, like Constantine…. and in one of the episodes, the investigators talked about ” aswangs” , as if it’s a common thing ( didn’t mention aswangs were from Filipino folklore )….. By the way, I was surprised at first the manananggal wasn’t in Trese….. heard the creature would be the top tier creature in Second season, knock on wood. Manananggal is so iconic.

            • Watched it ! ! Surprise, surprise____ it’s about a manananggal ! I didn’t know it was a Southeast Asian lore, except in other countries, it’s the head that gets detached, eewww.

  3. When you mention “a white girl playing a chinese girl…who won an Oscar for her role…” Man, my husband and I have been watching old flicks and we’ve now become quite attuned…as two white people…how Hollywood has portrayed people of race, and boy we cringe at the “blackface” “brownface” “asianface”…oof. I mean Sean Connery as James Bond went stealth as someone of Asian descent “with o’little makeup” and it was so awful! lol I’m glad there is a reckoning and accountability with who Hollywood casts these days. I know it’s slow, but it’s happening!

    • Ha ha ! But you know, I can understand that they’d get these actors to play Asians ____ there weren’t any non- white actors of Hollywood calbre who could play those roles, and pull people to watch them. Sometimes , they even had to change their ethnicity to fit the role. Example… the main illustrator of Marvel is a Filipino, Will Protacio, an with Stan Lee’s permission, he managed to add a Filipino super hero * forgot the name * , but that super hero is huuuuge , ha ha, so in the movie, they got a black man, instead. They could have gotten Batista, who’s Fil-American. Well, Will Protacio was able to sneak in something Filipino ______ Thanos retired in the Philippines ( Avengers ) , somewhere in the Cordilleras where the famous Philippine Rice Terraces is located. He he Oh, and in one of the cities destroyed was Manila ( they sneaked in a Jollibee sign , an iconic fastfood in the Philippines. I don’t know if you’ve watch this Jessica Alba TV series , ( forgot the name of the series___ I think there’s an Angel in it ) _____ anyway, she was supposed to be Asian, and I’m sure she was Filipina…. I mean, an Asian with Spanish name , he he , who could she be ?

      • Jessica Alba was in Dark Angel. Never watched it…A Korean-Canadian by the name of Simu Liu will be playing Shang-Chi in the newest Marvel Movie. Really great actor. He was in Kim’s Convenience which is a Canadian sitcom that just wrapped up.
