I wrote about the beach house my family is building on Boracay Island, Philippines. If you haven’t read it, it’s here. We’ve been calling our aunt in the Philippines to check on the progress of construction. As of last week, the foundation had been dug and they had already put the rebars , etc. The original plan was just a one -story duplex, one unit for rent, and one for the family. We’ve since altered the plan. Now it’s a two-story house with 6 bedrooms and 4 toilet/baths. I/m worried my parents and aunt have bitten off more than they could chew, but I trust they can do this. They have supervised construction of several properties, after all..However, though they are all rentals too, this is the first time they’re going into this kind of business… We classify it as Vacation House for Rent by Owner and we’re going to advertise it as such. Locals and foreigners can reserve the house at VRBO.com ( Vacation Rental By Owner ) by February, 2014. It’s 7,000 Philippines pesos a day ( USD150). That’s cheap, considering that the cheapest room at nearby Shangrila Hotel is USD300. Ours is the whole house that can accomodate at least 12 persons. During low season, we’ll rent out individual rooms for $30 /day. We’re still figuring out how this can be done. Oh, and the most important thing is to have it advertised in South Korea and Japan in their own language, especially South Korea.
Speaking of which…….
There was a joke that went around in the Philippines during the North Korea crisis. They say the South Koreans are not worried about North Korea because half of the population of S.Korea are already residing in the Philippines. Ha ha . J/k
Currently, dozens of US Embassies in the Middle East, and North Africa have been closed indefinitely, or on high alert. Americans are warned not to travel to these countries. Well, you can travel to the Philippines. Two days ago, Chris Matthews on Hardball announced a list of top 5 countries that view The US most favorably. # 5 is Kenya ( Pres. Obama’;s father was from there) and guess what is # 1. Tadaaaa ! The Philippines. 86% of the country view the US favorably. I expected England and Japan to be # 1 …. surprisingly, no. So, fellow Americans, we’re welcome there, very much so.
Okay, enough of self-promotion.On to my Paris tour, as promised.

The Seine River , Notre Dame Cathedral is nearby. By the way, it’s pronounced No-truh Dahm ( the “o ” in No is like the “o” in hot ) . TV hosts , especially sportcasters are perpetuating this Noter Deym pronunciation. Well, there’s nothing we can do to correct Los Angeles. But it’s pronounced Los An-he-les. Sorry for nitpicking. lol

.City dwellers should drive this smart car here in the US. It doesn’t occupy too much space, and doesn’t consume too much gasoline. It’s green. This was actually the very first thing I noticed in Europe. The cars were small, especially in Italy and the Netherlands.

I don’t know if you’ve ever noticed that there are countries where the word “The ” is placed before the name of the country. Ex: the United States, the United Arab Emirates, the Netherlands, and , oh, yeah, the Philippines. In fact, these are the only countries that I know of that have ” THE ” before the name. We don’t say, in the Japan, in the Indonesia, in the England, in the China , in the Italy, etc. It does sound awkward, doesn;t it?

.The building of this arch was commissioned by Emperor Napoleon to honor those who died during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. It’s located on the right bank of the Seine River.

it will be ready by next Philippine summer ! You can join up with several people , the more the cheaper. We’ll still trying to figure out the mechanics of how to rent out only the rooms… this is for those who won’t be able to afford to rent the whole house if there are only 3 of you, for example. VRBO.com is a site where you can make reservations, and pre-pay by credit card.
Maybe you can contact me personally, and I can arrange it over there, and they will wait for you. I know some owners give out their account number, and that;s how you pay pre-pay.

In the olden days, there used to be something that was called a FIAT 500. Like a Mini Cooper but even smaller, I think. TINY car. In Italy (again, in the olden days), most girls got around on little Vespas.

I believe your parents and aunt doing the right thing – believe that tourists more and more seeks that kind of place when they are traveling – much more freedom…. 🙂
The United Kingdom too – I believe is used when the countries are is composed of several strong regions may autonomous communities and where the name is a kind of “umbrella” above – France often called “La France” (every one says that the country is a (lovely) woman)… 🙂

personally, I knew some friends who couldn’t find a place to stay when they got there, which was of course quite a mistake, but they didn’t know. They should have made a reservation. They’ve been thinking about this for a long time. and since the property is already there, we thought of making it earn.

I just read your post. I’m eager to look at your photos. I’m sure they will be amazing pics. Mine are …. aaaargh. Blurry, out of focus, etc. That’s the problem when there’s a tour guide who walks so fast there’s no time to stop and shoot a decent picture. I just click and click and hope for the best.

Wonderful pictures Renx. I was in Paris in 2007 and it was beautiful. I did drive one of those Smart cars while there. Also drove to Rouen, another nice city. Would love to return some day. Thanks for sharing.

No never went there. A friend of mine worked some in Marseille though, which is about 300 km from there. One of these days I want to take some time and travel all through Europe. I think that would be fantastic!!!

Our house is in a very small subdivision, something like just 100 houses, but 4 homeowners are Korean families, and just nearby is a Korean Elementary School, and there’s a commercial zone just outside our subdivision with 7 Korean restaurants, ha ha. And the markets are selling ingredients for korean dishes. In Bagiu, the Starbucks coffee house there was full of koreans, and that was in Bagiu, so far away from Manila. Mom was really surprised, although when we were there the tenants renting our condo were korean students, and that was 17 years ago.

I think they outnumber the other foreigners outside the Philippines. It’s like for as long as there is a city, there is a Korean. Some of them are even Korean nationals and some Korean kids are thinking they are Filipinos.

Oh, right , Mr. Hook. I actually wrote about that… that the beauty of Europe is man-made… like all those amazing cathedrals…. and ancient ruins. There’s so much history there and you will really feel it. ! ! The Americas, where we live, Mr. Hook, are relatively young. But we have our own natural wonders that are incomparable too.

i would love to see the Seine River! sigh Romantic! lol. I roll my eyes every time they mispronounce Notre Dame. oh well, I wonder why no one ever corrected those sport casters! Especially the peeps from Louisana, or Quebec! Maybe they were laughing at them. ha ha ha.
You dont have many smart cars? Really? Its pretty funny to see a smart car in drive thru because here is a tiny car and its in between two big cars or trucks. I always joke to the driver they need to put a safety flag on the antennae so drivers can see them. Or they will be crushed when the truck drives up, because the driver couldnt see them!!!
we quite a few of smart cars, but my city is the center of oil and gas industry, so its big rigs all the time, and its the north, so no fancy cars. lol tho people do try to drive their little corvettes etc and look ridiculous doing so!

That little car? It’s not green. It is better than an SUV, but it still consumes gasoline, burns it and blasts carbon-dioxide and noise into the air.
It’s Paris, even if somebody doesn’t want to walk or ride a bicycle, there is a metro or a bus to everywhere. No need to use a car.

yes, that’s what the tour guide said. The metro and bus are very efficient. Still, the small car is so much better than the big , humungous vehicles Americans are so fond of, not only SUVs, but big trucks, I have to admit the smart cars will not be good to drive on the freeways, but since Americans normally own 2 cars or more, they should have one for city driving. I drove a rental small Fiat, and it was really cool. I didn’t mind other drivers looking at the car (and smiling or snickering )

It’s a purely electric car and eeriely quiet. It’s California-based, made in California, and you can buy it straight from the manufacturer, no car dealer middlemen, and that’s why they are hated, lol. Its safety rating is 5 stars, ++++, well beyond the highest rating. I’m sure the california Hollywwod, Silcon Valley types will be its number one customers. Look it up.
We can’t afford it either, but it’s comforting to know green cars are already here. I hope they can lower the price, though.

There won’r be much amenities, Anne. We can supply towels, etc. and microwave, coffees, etc… maybe toiletries, but that’s all. Mom has started buying stuff for the house ( wash cloths, etc.) but we have decided to buy everything in the Philippines.

yes it is. it is much cheaper than the one we rented last 2011. yes, you should buy supplies here in the Philippines. it is much cheaper when you buy in bulks.

You know, airlines all over have changed their baggage rules…. from 50 kilos to just 25. That’s just enough for our one month clothes.

Good luck with the beach house that you guys are building! You know, I’ve wanted to go to the Philippines for a really long time, because I know it’s supposed to be a wonderful place to visit. Right now, I’d do almost anything to be sitting on a beach there! I’m also obsessed with mangoes from the Philippines. You get them in Hong Kong and they’re my favourite mangoes in the world! They’re so juicy and sweet!

Hi again Ren.
I was just reading your blogs and had to comment on the part where you said everyone likes the U.S. in the Philippines.
The only country in the world that is disliked more than the U.S. is England. Not the UK as a whole, not Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, just England. As an English man I’ve picked up on this a lot! Even the aforementioned home nations dislike the English.
It’s sort of funny and sad at the same time. lol
